A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
