Sam Fender won the honor recently in Newcastle

The star has given the entirety of his £25,000 honor prize money to the MVT, which functions to protect the UK's independent music venues.

Fender was awarded the prize on October 16 as his new release the album was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function local spots played in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The money assisted spaces that were confronting possible closure due to issues arising from floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues received monetary aid in improving facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted musicians and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in big venues helps the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," the star has said.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

In they won the prize in the mid-90s for their album the album, vocalist Cocker declared that the band would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her bounty across several charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed new equipment," she told outlets.

In recent years, they contributed their funds to the youth organization that supported their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners they donated their prize to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," said artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved two grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in that location were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
